Professor William Bazeyo Installed as First Patron of CSFAAU

On 28th September 2024, the Commonwealth Scholarships and Fellowships Alumni Association of Uganda (CSFAAU) held a memorable Annual General Meeting (AGM) at Onomo Hotel, Kampala, where the highlight of the day was the installation of Professor William Bazeyo as the association’s first-ever Patron.

During the AGM, Professor Bazeyo shared his inspirational journey as a Commonwealth Scholar, taking the alumni back to 1991, a time when Kampala was devoid of modern technology. He humorously recalled the lengths he went to, traveling across town to access a photocopier in order to complete his Commonwealth Scholarship application. Through his story, he encouraged alumni to fully utilize the technological advancements now at their disposal to create greater positive impact in their communities.

The AGM, moderated by CSFAAU’s General Secretary, Patrick Okeng, began with welcome remarks from the association’s president, Collin Ogara, and Commonwealth Scholarships Programme Manager, Caroline Kiconco. Following the executive committee’s report, excitement grew as the agenda turned to the introduction of Professor Bazeyo as Patron. He was ushered in with a standing ovation, marking a pivotal moment in the history of the association.

Professor Bazeyo’s credentials are both extensive and impressive. He holds a Bachelor of Surgery degree (MB ChB) from Makerere University, a Master of Medicine in Occupational Medicine (M Med OM) from the National University of Singapore, a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from Atlantic International University, and an honorary Doctor of Science degree from Tufts University. He also completed a Certificate in Authentic Leadership Development from Harvard Business School.

Throughout his distinguished career, Professor Bazeyo has held numerous leadership roles. These include serving as Dean of the Makerere University School of Public Health, Deputy Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration at Makerere University, and Head of the University Grants and Management Support Unit. His leadership extends beyond academia, as he has chaired various national and international boards, including the Uganda Cancer Institute and the Uganda National Research Innovation Fund, and serves as the CEO of Africa One Health University Network (AFROHUN) and Director of the Resilient Africa Network (RAN).

In recognition of his exceptional contributions, Professor Bazeyo has received numerous accolades, including the Melvin Jones Fellowship from Lions International, Uganda’s highest civilian honor (the Gold Medal), and a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2022 at the Heroes in Health Awards. His research, funded by global institutions like USAID and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, has been published in over 100 peer-reviewed journals.

Inaugural Speech: A Call to Action

In his inaugural address, Professor Bazeyo emphasized the importance of giving back to the community, echoing the earlier sentiments of Caroline Kiconco. “The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC) invested in each of us,” he reminded the audience, “and it is only right and fitting that we give back.” He praised the executive committee for their accomplishments over the past year, which were highlighted in the their visually engaging report, and spoke directly to the challenges raised during the meeting.

Drawing from his vast experience, he offered practical advice on resource mobilization and financial sustainability, addressing concerns raised during the report from the association’s finance department presented by Deputy Treasurer, Noah Ochima. He also recommended valuable reading materials and online resources to further empower alumni in their pursuit of personal and professional growth. Encouraging the members to set high standards and to fearlessly pursue their goals, Professor Bazeyo left the alumni inspired and ready to take on new challenges.

A Celebratory Atmosphere

The installation of Professor Bazeyo as Patron was celebrated with a cake-cutting ceremony and group photos on the hotel’s patio, where he engaged warmly with alumni.
